Renaissance Banquet in company of Duke John and Catherine Jagiellon
The Renaissance feast at Turku Castle is a spectacular time travel back in history to Duke John’s court. Knights will direct you and troubadours welcome you as you arrive. During dinner the Duke and Duchess will amuse you with interesting stories while you enjoy the delicious food and drinks.
The Renaissance Banquets are hosted by Duke John and Catherine Jagiellon. The great king Gustavus Vasa had Turku castle renovated during the 1550’s and appointed his son John ruler of Finland. The Duke found a friend in King Sigismund of Poland and as part of this friendship the King’s sister Catherine and John were married in 1562 and settled in Turku.
The programme for the Renaissance banquet, as well as the costumes, follows age-old traditions. In the course of the evening the Duke and the Duchess will entertain the court with songs and tales of the years they spent at Turku Castle. The guests will enjoy a splendid six course menu in Renaissance style, consisting of dishes typical for the 16th century.
The Renaissance Banquet at Turku castle is the longest running show dinner in Finland and has been performed since 1979 for kings, presidents, conferences, anniversaries etc. in honour of the traditions set by the Ducal Couple themselves in the 1560’s.
